Cannabis-infused Sugar

December 2022 by Sandy Yanez

I love cannabis sugar because it is easy to make and can add a little magic to whatever you are consuming. Cannabis sugar can be used just like real sugar, just stir a spoonful into your morning coffee or tea or swap out regular sugar for cannabis sugar and add to your favorite cookie, brownie, or cake recipe, and even sauces. Seriously, the possibilities are endless!

And you are not limited to white sugar. You can infuse brown sugar, coconut sugar, monk fruit, and erythritol sweeteners as well.

To make cannabis sugar there is one very important thing to remember… You must use an alcohol-based tincture. An oil base will not dry nor will the THC stick to the sugar.

Alcohol-based tinctures or a concentrate that has been decarboxylated (THCa converted to THC) are ready to use and can be infused quickly and easily with precise dosing.

**Do Not Use Isopropyl Alcohol in your cannabis sugar recipes**

Quick and easy

Here’s a very simple recipe for making cannabis-infused sugar using a purchased alcohol-based tincture that can be found here.

You will need:

  • High-proof alcohol, ideally 190 proof is best to use. Lower-proof alcohols have a higher oil content and do not evaporate as well.
  • A 9×13 glass dish.
  • Glass measuring cup.
  • Granulated sugar.
  • Rubber spatula.
  • Cannabis alcohol-based tincture.

The steps:

  • Measure out one cup of sugar and pour it into a glass 9×13 dish, spread it out evenly.
  • Pour the tincture into a glass measuring cup and top off with 190 proof alcohol to total one cup.
  • Pour cannabis alcohol mix onto the sugar and gently mix making sure the sugar is saturated.
  • Cover with cheesecloth to keep dust, cat hair, fairies, etc. out and set somewhere out of reach of children and animals.

**Alcohol is highly flammable.

DO NOT dry in the oven.**

You will need to stir several times throughout the drying process to help the alcohol evaporate off. This may take up to 48 hours depending on the humidity and air movement in your home. Make sure while the sugar is drying to have good air ventilation or a window open to help disperse the alcohol from your home. If you do not stir the sugar enough during the drying process, the sugar will harden. Don’t worry, the sugar can be placed in a bag and crushed with a rolling pin or whatever you have on hand that will break up the sugar.

Once completely dry, store in an airtight jar to keep dry.

Green Dragon tincture

If you want to make cannabis sugar from your favorite bud, known as Green Dragon tincture, there are a few more steps. First, you need to decarboxylate the bud to get it ready for infusion.

You will need:

  • Cannabis flower and amount of your choice. Make sure to decarb before you start making the tincture!
  • High-proof alcohol, 190 proof works best.

The steps:

  • Decarb your flower first. This is a must-do if you want your THCa to convert to THC and get the full effects.
  • Place decarbed cannabis in a mason jar.
  • Pour just enough alcohol over the cannabis to cover it.
  • Attach the lid and shake vigorously.
  • Place the jar in the freezer and continue to agitate the jar often during this 24-hour process. (Some let this tincture sit for several days before straining.)
  • After 24 hours strain the tincture through a filter. I have used a coffee filter, a French press, and cheesecloth – all worked well but I do prefer the French press.
  • Store in a cool dark place for up to 6 months.

Now you have a cannabis-infused tincture ready for cannabis sugar making. Note this tincture will be green in color and have a plant taste.

Golden Dragon tincture

The golden tincture is also known as QWET (quick wash extraction technique) and is made with cannabis that has been frozen and high-proof alcohol. This method will be lighter in color because chlorophyll is not pulled from the plant. This will also give the tincture less of a plant taste.

You will need:

  • Cannabis flower of your choice and amount.
  • High-proof alcohol – again 190 proof is best.

The steps:

  • Decarb the flower first to get the full effects.
  • Place the decarbed flower in a mason jar and put it in the freezer overnight.
  • Place the alcohol in the freezer overnight as well.
  • Next day pour the alcohol over the cannabis until covered completely and replace the lid tightly.
  • Gently agitate the jar, do not shake, and place it back into the freezer.
  • Agitate in the freezer every 5 min for 15 minutes or longer (I have infused for 24 hours before with outstanding results).
  • After 15 minutes you can remove it from the freezer and strain it through your filter of choice.
  • Store in a dark jar or bottle in a cool place or refrigerator for several months.

Now you have a cannabis-infused tincture ready for cannabis sugar making.

Enjoy your canna sugar! Be safe and get baked responsibly!
