Cannabis and the Holidays

October 2023 by Sandy Yanez

The holiday season is filled with endless festivities, including extravagant feasts and delicious cocktails. It’s a special time of year when family and friends come together to celebrate and enjoy each other’s company. However, it can be challenging for cannabis users who prefer not to get high in front of their loved ones. Some family members may not be accepting, and others may not understand the benefits of cannabis. You may also feel uncomfortable smoking around children or parents, or you may prefer to keep your cannabis use private. While it’s fun to indulge, it’s also essential to take some time to rest and recharge. This is where cannabis can be helpful. Whether you’re nursing a hangover, relieving holiday-related stress, or simply relaxing by the fire, incorporating cannabis into your holiday routine can be a fantastic option.

Soothe a hangover

Cannabis may not be a complete cure for hangovers, but it can certainly provide some relief. It’s known to alleviate nausea, reduce anxiety, and relieve pain. If you’re having trouble sleeping after a night of drinking, cannabis can also help you get a peaceful daytime nap. While both THC and CBD have pain-relieving properties, CBD options are better suited for easing hangover symptoms. Indica strains, which contain helpful components like myrcene, are particularly helpful in promoting relaxation.

Booze-free option

Avoid the drawbacks of alcohol, including hangovers and spiked blood sugar, by opting for cannabis instead. Cannabis consumption can increase social connectivity without any of the negative consequences associated with drinking. Consider making a THC-infused beverage to have something to hold throughout the evening, allowing you to enjoy the company without needing to excuse yourself for a cannabis break.

Weed out stress

The holiday season is undoubtedly a stressful time of year. According to a 2022 survey by the American Psychiatric Association, 31% of adults report increased stress during the holidays, with younger adults being more susceptible. The added expenses, social gatherings, and travel are all contributing factors. However, there may be a solution to help alleviate these seasonal woes. A 2017 study from the University of Washington found that lower THC doses and all doses of CBD can

effectively reduce anxiety. It’s important to consume cannabis with care, though. The study also revealed that higher doses of THC can actually increase anxiety. If you plan to use cannabis to ease holiday stress, begin with low-THC strains or gradually increase your intake of edibles until you find the perfect dosage.

Must-Try Products for the Holiday Season

Tinctures and Capsules

For those seeking an effective and discreet method of dosing, tinctures, and capsules are the way to go. They can be easily transported, and you can choose the perfect amount to achieve your desired effect. Tinctures are applied under the tongue, making them ideal for microdosing, and their effects can be felt within just 15 minutes. You can even add them to your favorite holiday beverage! Capsules, on the other hand, are more similar to edibles in terms of their onset time, so be sure to wait at least an hour before taking another.

Vape Pens are a Great Option

Vape pens are a fantastic alternative for those who want to experience the benefits of cannabis without the drawbacks. For one, the vapor produced by vaporizer cartridges is much less dense and odorous than traditional cannabis smoke, making it easier to use discreetly. They’re also incredibly portable and can be taken anywhere, anytime (as long as it’s legal). Whether you’re dealing with family or cooking duties or feeling stressed from holiday travel, vape pens can be a great way to lift your mood without having to light up a joint. Moreover, if you’re looking to relax without the high, CBD vapes are also available.

Savor an Edible Secretly

It’s probably not the best idea to spark up in front of Grandma, so it’s essential to explore alternative methods to enjoy cannabis without upsetting the more conservative members of your family. This is where edibles come in handy. They are perfect for discreetly indulging your cravings. Typically, edibles take around 30-45 minutes to kick in, and the effects can last for up to five hours. However, keep in mind that if you indulge after a full Thanksgiving meal, it may take up to two hours to take effect.

Remain Vigilant Without the Intoxication

The holiday season can be demanding, particularly for hosts. If you’re looking for something that won’t leave you feeling dazed and confused, then consider CBD. Unlike THC, CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that is known to produce relaxation, heightened awareness, pain relief, and reduced anxiety, among other benefits. So, rather than becoming too intoxicated, consider switching to CBD during the holiday rush to be the best host you can be.
